But since things are slowly returning to normal, now is the perfect time to explore the city and its breathtaking attractions. However, the government's implementation of stringent measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 has led to no new cases being reported in 30 days, and lockdown restrictions are slowly being lifted.
A visit to some famous Bangkok tourist attractions reveals the impact COVID-19 has had. At Mochit BTS Station, only three main entrances were open, with preventive measures such as temperature checks and sanitizing stations in place. QR code scan instructions using the Thai Chana app were also enforced. The streets were noticeably empty compared to before, as seen at Grand Palace, where locals strictly enforce safety protocols, including face masks and social distancing requirements. The same can be said about Wat Pho Temple complex and Chinatown, where a lack of visitors is apparent despite their vibrant culture and sightseeing opportunities.
COVID-19 may have significantly impacted Thailand's tourism industry, but the country is doing its best to ensure visitors still get an authentic experience. Different safety protocols are implemented across all tourist attractions throughout Bangkok.
COVID-19 Restrictions at Chatuchak Market and Wat Pho in Bangkok
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a drastic effect on Bangkok's culture, sightseeing, and tourism. Tourist attractions such as Chatuchak Market and Wat Pho have implemented strict restrictions due to the spread of the virus.
Chatuchak Market now employs a temperature reading app at its entrance to eliminate long queues. The once-crowded streets now host cars instead of pedestrians, and restaurants in and around the market are mostly empty. Visitors are warned of social distancing, and many shops have closed due to financial difficulties caused by COVID-19 lockdowns.
For now, only Thais are allowed to visit Wat Pho, home to one of Thailand's largest reclining Buddha statues, to avoid the risk of foreign carriers bringing COVID-19 into the country. However, this rule should be lifted by July 1st, providing tranquility during visits.
Despite the restrictions, Bangkok still offers plenty of other authentic Thai experiences, such as temples, markets, and museums waiting for visitors to explore.
Reclining Buddha and Grand Palace Get Refurbishment During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in international travel, resulting in a rare opportunity to explore Thailand's tourist attractions. During our visit, we were privileged to witness the refurbishment of two iconic sites in Bangkok – the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and the Grand Palace – due to a lack of visitors.
While at Wat Pho, we were able to appreciate details that may have gone unnoticed in normal times since the Reclining Buddha statue was closed for renovation work. We admired the intricacies of the temple and the impressive sight of its walls being repainted and gilded with gold leaf. This breathtakingly beautiful temple allowed us to witness something we may not have otherwise had the chance to see.
At Bangkok's Grand Palace, which is usually one of the top four tourist attractions in Asia, we saw fewer people visiting due to the pandemic. Although some areas were under maintenance or closed off entirely to visitors, the Palace still showcased its remarkable features and gave us hope for brighter days ahead when the pandemic is over.
Overall, our visit provided a unique insight into how Thailand is dealing with lockdowns caused by COVID-19. The country is taking advantage of the situation by refurbishing important sites while also allowing for individual appreciation and shared admiration when looking towards a better future after the pandemic has passed. The Thai government hopes domestic tourism can help sustain their economy until international tourism returns in full force.
